With this app, Rijkswaterstaat shows the potential of open data.
You too as a user can contribute to the knowledge and appreciation about artworks (bridges, tunnels, locks and viaducts) by sharing this with us via the Reporting and Like Function in the Artworks App.
The app was developed by 2coolmonkeys. The locations of the RWS artworks have been made available by Rijkwaterstaat
We have put more than 5000 RWS artworks on the map. Red is "dry", blue is "wet". You can request details per item, including the corresponding Wikipedia page, street view and messages. You can leave a message per artwork and "like".
Our dream is 5000 likes. We are very curious what our most beautiful work of art will be!
What is open data
With the arrival of the internet, a global trend has been created in which more and more information has become available on the most diverse topics. There is also the realization within the European Union that the making of certain data sources has interesting benefits.
Dutch government institutions, such as the municipality of Amsterdam, therefore also make more and more data available.
Making the data available in itself does not yet provide added value.
To realize the potential added value of the open data, it must be applied within society.
Combining the various data sources and publishing through various media channels plays an important role in this.
What does this app do
The artworks app uses the Linked Open Data Concept. Do you want to know how this works? Tap one of the red points on the map. There is a work of art under each point. If you click on a work of art, the technology automatically collects all information. Via 'Wiki' you will then learn everything about the artwork, via 'Messages' you can post your own comment' and via 'Streetview' you go to the Streetview photo.
